What Is a Digital Asset?

A digital asset is a type of virtual property or security with economic value that can be bought, sold and stored digitally. Nowadays, the term “digital asset” is typically used in reference to blockchain technologies and assets like cryptocurrencies, tokens, perpetual contracts, smart contracts, staking, liquidity providers, and NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

The most commonly used types of digital assets in the world are digital photos, illustrations, websites, apps, videos, audio and other data. However, these are not commonly referred to as digital assets like blockchain-based assets.

Most Popular Types of Blockchain Digital Assets

– Cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Litecoin, etc.)
– Tokens (governance, security, synthetic, utility, etc.)
– NFTs (collectables, art, videos, audio, property, gaming, etc.)
– Perpetual contracts (derivatives trading)
– Staking (blockchain dividends)
– Smart contracts (programs on blockchains that run when predetermined conditions are met)
– Apps & websites (banking, trading, streaming, e-commerce, etc)

How and Where to Get Digital Assets

Cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, Gemini and Coinbase are where we, and the majority of investors, buy, sell and trade cryptocurrencies and tokens.

Web3 wallets such as MetaMask are another option for buying, selling, and holding cryptocurrencies. We use a MetaMask wallet to use decentralized exchanges (DEXes) and to invest in decentralized finance (DeFi).

We also use the crypto fund Kingsly Digital Asset Fund for investing in crypto and blockchain tokens. Some crypto funds, like Kingsly’s, have access to hundreds more cryptos compared to the limited selection offered on crypto exchanges. Funds are sometimes able to buy tokens before crypto exchanges list the tokens.
